If I ever had a chance to give an award to someone that had a significant impact on my life, it would be my EOP advisor Scott Quinell. He deserves an award because of his outstanding advising. Scott Quinell has impacted my academic success at SUNY Canton, through helping me with my education, course selection, and career planning. He has also helped me with personal issues regarding to the transition from high school to the college environment. I was the only student from my high school that attended SUNY Canton. SUNY Canton is the school that I chose to go to, but I was nervous and scared because I was 7 hours away from home, and I didn't know anyone.
Throughout the beginning of my first year I use to stay in my room most of time and chose to not get involve others, but that came to end with the help Scott Quinell. Scott is very approachable Advisor. As an EOP student I had to meet with Scott at least once every 2 weeks. Every time I met with he would ask me general questions, including how I was doing personally and how my classes were going as well. Further more he would persuade me to feel free to share any personal problem I was having regarding the residential hall. At first I didn't want to share anything with him because I didn't really trust him. Has time went on I begin to trust him and explained the issues I was having because he gave me his full attention, really cared about my well being and showed me he was only there to help. He then encouraged me to get involved on campus to get the best experience of college. I decided to apply for a resident assistant job and Scott helped me with my application by writing me a reference letter. He also took some time out of his day job, to talk to the resident director about my potentials, that will be will be a great asset to the residential community. I finally got the job and I really appreciated his help because I couldn't do with out him.
Beside a resident assistant, I came out of my shells to get involve with other organization because of the confidence he has helped me develop. Now I am part of SUNY Canton’s organizations including, Brother 2 Brother, African Student Union, and Delta Omega Epsilon fraternity. The resident assistant job and my participation in other organization, has helped me improve my social skills, communication skills and leadership skills. As for as my education he does his best to keep me in track and give advices, on how to succeed in the classroom. At the end of the day, I’m the one who attend those classes so it all depends on my participation. He could only give me advices and it’s for me to take those advices to put it into action. I believe I’m doing pretty well with those advices, because my average is always above 3.0.
